Marxist orthodoxy means absolutely nothing except to people who see themselves as orthodox Marxists, right? Essentially, we see in the wider society how capitalism creates a civic culture in which people blame down and give the benefit of the doubt to their betters. These kinds of well-cultivated responses don't go away when people decide that they're "Marxists." For this reason, so much of the energy and attention of people who think of themselves as "Marxist" involves blaming the shape of the world on something other people who call themselves "Marxist" have done or not done. We have the extreme and almost psychotic example of the Sparts who seem to think that the reason American workers have not made a revolution is because a particular antiwar meeting hasn't launched a Leninist party...or a group of professors haven't...or the Norwood Ladies' Chess Club hasn't done it. Or the reason we don't have a bigger movement is because people are not using the right magic words.... The trend has always been to initially cite Marxism as a justification for moving politically to the right...and to blame Marxists who remain to the left for failing to cling to their principles...secularism, I guess, in this case.
