This is great stuff, and very useful, Erik. Thanks. Whenever this topic comes up I like to refer people to Kurt Vonnegut's account (in Palm Sunday and elsewhere) of how his family only dropped their German language and culture (although they were thoroughly bilingual) due to the antiGerman repression during World War I. And by coincidence, last night at the Brecht Forum Roberto Lovato pointed out how the multilingual mass strikes of the early 20th Century (mostly of Eastern and Southern Europeans) were purposely crushed by the witchhunting, prosecution and mass deportations of Federal police forces which would later become the FBI. (By the way, the forum as a whole was fantastic, will send tapes and/or transcripts when available.)
