There is no algorithm of genocide, by which one can determine through absolute or relative deaths whether a people is being subject to a 'genocide' or 'democide' (or any of the other practices in the lexicon of -cides). If it were this simple, the question could be settled with a quick comparison: proportionally more people were directly slain in the first fortnight of Operation Cast Lead than were killed in a month of the killing fields in Darfur, which is widely comprehended as a genocide. The issue is the political processes involved. I make the argument for considering Israeli policy in terms of the framework of genocide here: http://leninology.blogspot.com/2009/01/at-what-point-does-it-become-genocide.html -- *Richard Seymour* Writer and blogger Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.leninology.blogspot.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/leninology Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Seymour_(writer) Book: http://www.versobooks.com/books/nopqrs/s-titles/seymour_r_the_liberal_defense_of_murder.shtml ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
