stansfield smith wrote re 'Some of Marta Harnecker's explanation of
the mistakes of 20th century socialism':

This sounds exactly like the garbage I was forced to study and take
seriously at University of Chicago social science grad school. Evidently
Harnecker is not concerned with addressing and educating workers and
peasants and revolutionaries, but in appealing to academics by speaking
their own pretentious nonsense. I would think that for someone
like Harnecker that it would be ABC that if you want to educate the
classes that are going to make the revolution, you'd better speak their
language.
----
This is actually quite amusing as Marta just returned to Caracas from
meetings in Barquisimeto and Carora, where she had meetings around the
book [which MR has published in its July-August issue] with electrical
workers and people from communal councils; their reaction was rather
different from Mr. Smith's as the electrical workers have undertaken to
organise around the book [published in Venezuela as 3 small books with a
video]. The book is also being used elsewhere in Venezuela [and in
several other countries]. Nothing really new for her as she did small
books for educating workers, etc in Allende's Chile, and these were
well-known among Latin American militants [if not in University of
Chicago grad sociology classes].
