re/ 23: there have been on average 60 major volcanic eruptions per year 
since 1960. depending on the duration of these eruptions, 23 doesn't 
sound so unbelievable.

there is some *suggestion* that melting ice caps alter the stress 
patterns in the earth's crust resulting in increased activity:

and i gather that historically, the end of ice ages was concomitant with 
increased volcanic activity.
