It's an idea that has been around for a few months now, and that Cantona
seems to have latched upon.
I only know of two people in my circle of acquaintances who have
actually gone to the trouble of withdrawing their entire wages from
their bank accounts at the beginning of every month since September and
then taken a small handful of 200-euro bank notes home with them.
One payed her yearly union dues with a crisp 200 euro bank note and
cheerfully added that she had arranged to pay her landlord in cash and
kept the rest of her money in a cookie jar in her kitchen.
She urged us all to do the same, arguing that it would bring about a
downfall of the banking system.
For my part, I still keep my money in a bank, because I've got a
mortgage to pay, direct-debit utility bills to pay, tax installments to
pay, and that my wife finds a credit card handier to carry around when
she goes to the store. I'm not even sure I could pay my mortgage
re-payments in cash even if I wanted to.
I might be wrong about this, but I don't think mass withdrawals of
people's paychecks from banks is going to happen. Not that it's a bad
idea mind you, after all, banks COULDN'T handle such massive demands for
cash and would be forced to freeze accounts.
