To date, we're aware of over 80 demonstrations in upwards of 12 countries! This is huge! People en masse are standing up to say "ya basta" to the cavalier destruction and warped sense of values that Citigroup and the corporate financial system perpetuate. To say "not with my money!". People are sick of mega-banks using their money to finance new oil, gas and mining projects, the destruction of the rainforests, the abuse of women and workers across the planet, and racist lending policies. We do not want to be compicit in the race to the bottom, and the overwhelming show of pressure we're exerting tomorrow is sending a resounding message to the powers that be that we have power! In Canada alone, 15 cities are calling on the largest, most egregious bank in their country, TB Bank, to quit bankrolling projects that are tearing down their forests. This is a solidarity movement in which communities around the earth are demanding accountability. Is life about the pursuit of money at any and all costs? The pursuit of profit with utter disregard for principals? We've heard inspiring stories from folks all over who think not: -From a 53 year old father who heard about the Citi campaign from his 18 year old son in Texas. Just last week he borrowed money from friends and from his pension plan in order to pay off and cancel his Citibank credit card. On April 11th he's contacting Citi to let them know why. He wants his son to grow up in a world that respects human dignity and all life on this planet. -From a student in Ohio who joined with fellow activists on campus to kick Citi's student loans out of their financial aide office! They're working this week to get an official letter of denunciation from their dean. -From a plaintiff in the Boom Boom Room suit--a class action suit against Saloman Smith Barney for flagrant and pervasive incidents of sexual harassment and abuse in Citi offices. She was astounded to learn that in addition to abusing women, Citi is abusing the earth as well. A number of co-plaintiffs have shown the courage to stand up and fight back--they're planning to take to the streets in protest at the annual shareholders meeting on April 17. GOOD LUCK to everyone who's planning events tomorrow. Whether it be non-violent direct action, creative theater, call-in or email actions, or leafletting to educate customers, remember that there are others like you out there across the globe striving for a sane and just future at the same time.
