All them Confederates a'singin'  sha na na--that there is powerful stuff.

I sort of liked the sound of The Band back in the day but their lyrics, like
pop lyrics in general were meaningless and incredibly stupid.  Was there ever
an actual night when "they" done drove ol' Dixie down? What bullshit.

I don't know why people get so caught up in this stuff.  To the extent that
they were invitin' the (white) college boys who were their principal audience
to slug down a long-neck and weep for Dixie, yes, it's pro-Confederate.  Maybe
some on 'em done wint out and slugged somebody.  Hoo-wa.

But the larger question is why people attribute so much significance to pop
culture in the first place. It's mostly crap. Donald Trump loves it and gets it
as much as anyone.

There's nothing in The Band or even--gasp!! the insanely overrated, unpleasant,
pretentious, sexist, and reactionary Bob Dylan to justify the fuss people make.
IMO, it's mostly young guys looking at their fantasy reflections in that
eternally and purposely clouded mirror and celebrating their own anxious
narcissism, so desperate for permission to be.

This is one canonical legacy from the Sixties that IMO really needs a second
look and a firm shove back into its proper place.
