Thanks for a great article. I've worked in the mental health industry and it is
first and foremost an outlet for the pharmaceutical industry. Like all
commodified American "medicine" it is focused on treating symptoms rather than
causes and mostly ignores the larger realities that shape our psychological
states. It is all about the indiviual, separate from the social realities that
shape us and about "coping" or at least chemical restraints. The drugs
prescribled; SSRIs, diazapines and anti-psychotics are often worse than the
conditions being misdiagnosed and treated.

I have found success on my own in treating (with good effect) anxiety disorders
which are a product of adrenal and HPA axis imbalance complicated by the terror
imposed by money-grubbing capitalists using natural herbs and amino acids that
do no harm. The best therapy for those not too disabled remains Radical
Therapy. That is getting involved to work on issues and finding empowerment and
a degree of control over ones life. This is stress reducing and community
building which is essential to our human nature as herd animals.

There is no separation between physical and mental and social. As soon as we
pretend that there is, we fail.  The best social workers and therapists realize
this and do great work but psychiatrists, burned out social workers and poverty
pimp agencies do more harm than good.
