He moved to Managua in Nicaragua in 1981 to be an advisor within the
government’s planning ministry, but finding that the Sandinista
leadership rarely tolerated critical advice, he left there the following
year to work for a Sandinista thinktank before returning to the American
University, where he wrote The Economies of Central America (1985)
before moving to teach at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Immediately after Chamorro was elected president of Nicaragua in 1990,
Weeks debated Paul Berman, an event I chaired and organized as a member
of the NY Nicaragua Solidarity Committee. NACLA had recommended Weeks,
even though I had a preference for Michael Moore who had been fired by
Mother Jones for refusing to publish a Berman article. I was shocked to
see that Weeks, unlike Berman, had decided to "wing it" with a
meandering ultraleft talk that likened the FSLN to the PRI in Mexico as
the USA ever had the same determination to topple the Mexican
nationalist mafia governments.
I subsequently learned that Weeks and his wife Elizabeth Dore were
Maoists ideologically. I think Weeks had a lifetime of achievements of
the kind noted in the obit but that evening was not one of them.
