Yes, media reporters as usual are lazy, slow and more interested in the official story than talking to actual witnesses. Video of the event shows Rittenhouse being pursued by a woman who is chasing him, hitting him, and trying to grab his rifle to take it away from him. Apparently she was also yelling for help, as some other people nearby -- men -- tried the same thing. Rittenhouse broke free as he was knocked down, then recovered himself while kneeling and began firing, chasing away his pursuers and killing others. Obvious questions raised by the video are: Why was this woman chasing Rittenhouse? She must have known (given that he was carrying a long gun, if for no other reason) he was up to no good. She needs to be found and interviewed. Also the other men who joined the pursuit.
Then there's the issue of law enforcement's ties to right-wing militia groups. The Hill article notes that Facebook took down some "law enforcement support groups" pages as well as that of Rittenhouse. Apparently Rittenhouse was involved in these groups. It's not enough for Facebook to take down the pages, they should explain why. Video of demonstrations in Kenosha shows some right-wing paramilitary groups standing guard, with guns, outside buildings right alongside official law enforcement groups. When asked about this at a press briefing afterward, the chief of police refused to answer beyond saying there was no problem, "they were not a threat." But it seems Rittenhouse was a member in good standing of some of these same groups. While suppressing the anti-racist protests, the police are acting hand in glove with their civilian supporters, some of whom just happen to be racist murderers. It seems we are just in between two stages, between what Timothy Snyder calls "the end is nigh" and "the end has come." Between fascist activity and complete fascist takeover. A very dangerous time.
