Let's also remember (and I certainly was guilty of this in my teen years)
that there were lies heaped on lies told about the left in the US --- my
brother always gives this example: The communist party is at a
demonstration where the police come in and crack heads and the newspapers
headline, "Communists riot" --- so no wonder they disbelieved the
capitalist press when it wrote about Stalin and his crimes --- So most of
the negative things about the SOviet Union that I "learned" (especially in
college) I was able to dismiss (at least most of it) as "lies" ---
I also agree that since communists on the ground (especially those not in
any leadership position) could see the good work they were TRYING to do,
they could "forgive" what "bothered" them about the "line" because they and
their immediate comrades were doing good work ---
I am sure (sorry for the analogy) that the clergy in the hierarchy who
protected pedophile priests (or "good cops" who protect their criminal
colleagues) believe they are making a "moral choice" because in the scheme
of things ("at the end of the day"!!) the GOOD they are doing (whether
"God's work" or protecting society from danger) is "worth it" --- even if
they have to tolerate (support? defend?) the indefensible ...
UNTIL IT'S NOT anymore -- which is why so many people left the CPUSA in
1939 after the Hitler-Stalin Pact and in 1956 after Khrushchev's secret
speech (and why there are so many ex-cops fighting the good fight for
police reform)
