If additional evidence was needed for what is presented in this article,
the post-George Floyd police murder demonstrations and riots throughout
the country provide it. Hundreds of minority-owned small businesses have
been destroyed. In interview-after-interview it is clear that their
owners were pillars of their communiites. The argument here is that it
is a mistake to lump together under the word “capitalism” multi-national
corporations and international financial institutions and small
businesses. In particular I am interested in small business people as
allies in the development of the people power that must be built in this
country if we are to slow, halt and reverse the vast inequalities that
now exist and the disproportionate power now held by those with great
wealth. Small business includes small farmers, entrepreneurs,
self-employed professionals and those who supplement their income with a
“home business” they operate from a study or garage.
