The article does admit that 60% of white workers voted for Trump. It then
proceeds to imply that this is nothing but a continuation of a voting
pattern that has gone on for many years. But that, in turn, implies that
Trump is just a continuation of what's been happening in the Republican
Party for many years. Of course, there are elements of the past Republican
Party in "Trumpism", but to fail to see a sharp break really is a failure
to see what's happening in the US (and the world, in fact). This, then,
implies a sharp shift in the thinking, the consciousness, of his
supporters, including white workers. Not that it's something completely new
or different, but that elements of the consciousness that were deeply
buried have come to the foreground and are dominant now.

So, yes, this is new.
