When my Southern Italian ancestry Grandfather moved from Upstate New York
to the south in 1963 he went to register to vote and was told he had to
take a test on the constitution. He was denied the right to vote three
times. He was pretty dark-skinned as many Italians from Southern Italy are.

The bad joke was on him; he was as racist as the people who denied him the
core. He was a racist in the obvious ways you can see in some Scorcese
films. I sometimes wonder if he was so racist because he so much did not
want to be "colored." He feared being categorized as colored.
