I agree mostly -- BUT, right-wing authoritarian populist can be contained --- or at least channelled --
The transformation of the Southern wing of the Populist Party in the US after 1896 (Woodward's THE STRANGE CAREER OF JIM CROW is still quite good on this) from a (albeit tentative) black-white alliance of poor farmers against the large landowners of the post Reconstruction South to a virulent racist one-party rule by a landowning - industrial oligarchy which lasted from say 1900 to 1966 or so channelled the "resistance" of the Populists (with a great democratic promise -- and not just for the South) into racism --- making the poor whites the famous "pawn in their game" as poetically described in the famous Bob Dylan song is a cautionary tail --- BUT --- the anti-authoritarian element even in right-wing Trump supporters might show up in resistance to imperial adventures abroad and the legalization of marijuana here at home .... Unfortunately, given US history, I'd bet on the primacy of racism in determining the behavior of too many of our fellow (white) working-class citizens -- but there's always hope --- lots of white workers overcame their knee jerk racism (even in the South) during CIO organizing drives beginning in the Depression ....
