The chaotic nature of Trumpism IIMO may well be not just an incidental defect in a version of authoritarianism, owing ton Trumps psychopathology, but a central tenet of a basically new ideological formation. Everyone seems to assume that "authoritarianism" is just lurking fully formed under the bed waiting to creep out and kill us all. But perhaps the shambolic and antisocial aspects of Trumpism are part of a systematic, if highly decadent, conceptual structure that will affect the future of US politics in unanticipated ways. In particular, this bears on the ability of Trumpians to tolerate any long-term disciplined interruption to their ecstatic and mystical selfishness as vs, their racism and their bloodlust.
Sniffy observations about the intellectual limitations--if so positive a characterization may be tolerated--of Trumpies as "couch potatoes" etc etc may be wide of the mark. I don't doubt that they can continue doing the great harm they have certainly been doing up to now--I just wonder whether, when demanded to exercise self-sacrifice for the Good of the Nation, many of these fantasists will leap to attention as everyone seems to assume they will.
