October 17 is the centenary of the founding of the Indian Communist
Party by Manabendra Nath Roy. MN Roy founded the Communist Parties of
both Mexico and India, debated Lenin and challenged Gandhi, but has been
written out of history by some. Socialism is often reduced to Europe
while anti-colonialism in India is often reduced to Gandhi. But Roy’s
life and politics in the 1920s embodied the connection between socialism
and anti-colonialism that continues to inspire.
