Academic disciplines developed and thrive to the extent that they can do
things for the people who finance them. The individuals who established
some intellectual legitimacy for them did not necessarily choose that role,
and those individuals who work within them--are no more responsible than an
assembly line worker is for what their industry did and does. These are
institutional questions and issues of power rather than moralizing over
this or that person..

You can call anything based on any criteria you choose, and people can
judge the legitimacy of the use. The idea of defining classes by the worth
of an estate or the amount of income is has great legitimacy for the people
who gather the taxes and project revenues available to the government. Not
how Marxists have done it historically, because we've been trying to
understand is somewhat different.

But, by all means, suit yourself.

Cheers,
Mark L.
