Kate Doyle Griffiths has written alargely positive <https://spectrejournal.com/the-rank-and-file-strategy-on-new-terrain/>andcomradely <https://spectrejournal.com/the-rank-and-file-strategy-on-new-terrain-2/>critique <https://spectrejournal.com/the-rank-and-file-strategy-on-new-terrain-3/>of the rank & file approach to socialist union work as it has been developed in my writings in the late 1990s essay/The Rank & File Strategy/and several recent attempts to update it. She raises important issues that deserve an equally positive and comradely response. I will discuss three major aspects the implementation of this approach to workplace organizing in today’s context of a changed and changing labor movement and the new socialist movement embodied mainly in the spectacular growth of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). These include the question of socialist organization and union work; the impact of social reproduction theory on a strategy focused mainly on unions and the workplace; and finally the contradictory effort to combine a rank and file approach to union work and an electoral orientation toward the Democratic Party that characterizes a good deal of the political thinking in DSA.
