When I created Marxmail in 1998, I had two objectives in mind that would
help the list be useful to Marxists. The first was to keep a short leash
on unreconstructed Leninists who had helped turn the list that preceded
it into a lunatic asylum. They never listened to each other and were
only interested in issuing proclamations.
The other objective was to keep ancient history on the back burner. I
didn't want to see debates about Trotsky's role in the Kronstadt
Rebellion, when the USSR became capitalist, whether the left should have
supported WWII, etc. There were enough problems that we faced in the
here and now that dictated the need for a fresh and intelligent
application of Marxist analysis. Like, for example, how to assess
degrowth, the nature of the Sanders campaign, the character of the
Syrian revolt, etc.
I am not closing the thread on the Spanish Civil War but I am urging
comrades to have their final say since I am not sure what good it does
to thrash out differences on the nature of the Popular Front, etc. Let's
focus on the pressing matters we face today. Clearly, there are lessons
from the past as I tried to draw out in my reply to Eric Blanc and Leo
Panitch on the Popular Front but the emphasis was on class politics today.
Okay?
