There are ways in which parents' objections today echo those of the parents of the 60s, which is as far back as I can go for a direct reference. Kids are always breaking the boundaries of fashion. In the time before the quarantine, I saw more and more teenagers (mostly boys) dressing either in girls' clothes, or androgynously. It's a fad. In five years, it will be something else.
At the same time, there are people who profit greatly from these fads. In the past, it was fashion designers and their media outlets. A quick glance at Teen Vogue will show articles that promote the advertising and advertising that promotes the articles. There's plenty of money to be made. With this fad, the medical establishment is cashing in too. Pharmaceutical companies, surgeons, insurance companies… . Cultural critiques are of limited usefulness. A class analysis is more important. I have yet to see that. (It may be out there, I just haven't seen it.) TSC -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
