This kind of dizzy percentage-mongering can be deceptive. Nevertheless, assuming this means anything, it may point to the increasing economic disenfranchisement of the Trumpy counties--where the better-off of course they think they can remedy by blowing everything up except their own precious boats and RVs. When people en masse hate their own self-interest, what is to be done?
The premise that there is in fact radical, rather than ruling-class factional, disagreement between Republicans and Democrats is of course untrue. The grain of truth in this bushel of chaff may, however, be that these "white, rural" voters are not altogether wrong in a) viewing their dwindling prestige and prosperity as still continuing, albeit rapidly dwindling, and b) in understanding that in the short run the way to optimize this diminishing resource is to double down on the racism that places the burden of bad outcomes unequally upon the "lesser breeds." I'm familiar with a part of the eastern midwest that includes a solid majority of rabid Trump supporters in places that have NOT entirely lost their industrial base, and where farming remains somewhat profitable. According to the conventional coastal wisdom--both liberal and radical--such places do not exist or are of no importance. It may be, however, that such islands of relative prosperity remain visible to many white people whose fortunes have declined precipitously, and may be giving hope for a prosperous right-wing future. If this is true, denying it won't influence the many stubborn resisters who cling desperately to the raft of neoliberal falsehood. It could be true, in other words, both that "the American Dream" is obviously failing the rural whites, and that the way in which it is failing nevertheless "realistically" allows a significant number to hope that all could be spared. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
