In my opinion, the argument about the long-term side-effects of COVID-19 has to be viewed in context.

1) We do not know much about the long-term side-effects of COVID-19 because the virus has been detected less than a year ago. So our knowledge on this is necessarily incomplete.

2) However, given the fact that this is a severe disease it is clear that it will have such long-term side-effects for a certain number of people.

3) This is however not something unique. Various diseases have long-term side-effects. Just think about tabaco, alcohol and drugs which not only kills many people but also has such terrible long-term effects (and not only for those addicted but also indirectly for people in their environment). No doubt, this shortens the lifetime of people by years. However, I am not aware that this has caused governments to ban selling of tabaco or alcohol (if we leave aside the U.S. in the prohibition period)

4) In addition, one must not forget the horrible long-term side-effects of the Lockdown policy. Economic and social destruction, regress in education, mental illnesses, etc. Again, this will shorten the lifetime of people by years.

5) Finally, one has to weigh the effects of the pandemic and the long-term political consequences for the political and democratic regress of the society when the army again takes a central role in political life, expansion of the police and surveillance state, etc.

We keep going around in circles on this pandemic question. It is not just deaths. It is permanent damage to one's health that is not easily turned into statistics. When someone dies, you add 1 to a running total. What happens if they don't die but walk around with migraines, shortness of breath and brain fog for the next 5 years? Who is supposed to follow a survivor around to keep tally when we can barely keep track of contact tracing?

As a resident of Sweden I visited the national statistics website for information on covid deaths and to take a deeper look. The latest figures are from the 21st December. (and not translated into English).  However the total number of deaths and ages of death are clear to see by scrolling down this page https://www.socialstyrelsen.se/statistik-och-data/statistik/statistik-om-covid-19/statistik-over-antal-avlidna-i-covid-19/ <https://www.socialstyrelsen.se/statistik-och-data/statistik/statistik-om-covid-19/statistik-over-antal-avlidna-i-covid-19/> The absolute majority of deaths are the 80+ age group. Other contributing illnesses are included as well. I trust this report.
