According to the WHO, there are currently only a total of 385 people
globally who are positive for influenza viruses!

Obviously there are more since not all can be detected. But this
extraordinary low figure helps to explain why extra mortality is not as
big as governments have warned. Many people who would have died because
of influenza have died because of another virus. Usually, 290-650,000
people die every year as a result of the influenza virus. (see e.g.
