Some years ago I read a book, which I no longer have, about navigation in
Polynesia. Lacking a polar star, the young men had to memorize the sky as it
changed throughout the night and throughout the seasons. They learned to look
at waves and determine if the waves had passed by an island that was out of
sight.
The anthropologists found people who knew how to travel to Hawaii, thousands of
miles away, even though no one had made the trip in 200 years.
And all of this without a written language.
