citizenship. Malcolm X’s defiant rhetoric against white supremacy made
him appear to many to be the counterpart to Martin Luther King Jr.’s
philosophy of nonviolence. He argued before global audiences that Black
lives not only mattered but were central to building a world free of
oppression.
