This strikes me as too clever.  What may be missing from Greek and Roman
"belief" in their gods is perhaps the Christian focus on belief as the
framework of a self-centered drama in which the believer finds and loses belief
continually, with Heaven and Hell constantly in the balance. The classical
"belief" in the gods may have involved assent to propositions about them with
truth value, but have lacked the highly focused terrorism of Christian
professed (and often feigned) belief.

"Strategy for identitarian self-assertion"--what can this possibly mean? What
is an "identitarian" anyway? The reality, I suspect, is that a lot of these
religious fakers are lying just like Trump--and like most religious fanatics
from time immemorial.  They do this in part because they get a kick out of
ramming their lies down other people's throats, knowing that they are lies. Why
sugar-coat this?   Still worse, why "Theory" coat it.

Participants in a special mode of consciousness to which "facts" are irrelevant
because (long pause) Theory ?  Not so much, unless they're up for tenure in a
Department of English somewhere.
