I think THE FRONT was a perfect way to "kill" the memory of the blacklist --- it "made fun" of it through the Woody Allen character -- BUT it also saw the terrible toll it took through the Zero Mostel character -- AND --- in the credits, it listed how virtually EVERYONE associated with the film had been blacklisted (except for Allen because he was so much younger!)
I'd love to see it again --- and for those who have not seen it, it really captures the way "fronts" were used .... And Bernstein seems to have retained his level head about these issues --- (by the way, I think that there is a difference between those ex-communists who became RATS and those who just changed their politics --- like Howard Fast. I know some leftists wanted nothing to do with Fast, but though he publicly criticized the Soviet Union, he never became a rat --- in fact as far as I know he never became a "public anti-communist" though I could stand corrected on that end ...There is an interesting debate in Victor Navasky's NAMING NAMES between Dalton Trumbo and Albert Maltz about whether even the informers among the Hollywood Ten were "victims" rather than "perpetrators"....)
