political prisoners in Russia***
At the end of January 2021, a wave of mass protests swept through all of
Russia's major cities. The occasion for these protests was the arrest of
opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but the genuine cause was the enormous
social inequality and political disenfranchisement prevailing in the
country. Not all of those who took to the streets were supporters of
Navalny, but they were all united by a desire for social and political
change and a fatigue with the corrupt, authoritarian regime ruling
Russia today.
Peaceful protesters faced unprecedented (even for Putin's Russia) police
brutality: in a few days, over 10,000 people were arrested, many of them
beaten on arrest. A climate of fear was created in the country: students
who participated in the rallies have been expelled from universities,
teachers who sympathized with them have lost their jobs, and school
students have been intimidated for voicing their political stance.
While we disagree with Navalny's pro-capitalist orientation, which on
this point is not different from that of Putin's regime and represents
no real social and democratic alternative, we demand the immediate
release of Alexei Navalny and all political prisoners, and stand in
solidarity with all those in Russia who are fighting for social and
environmental justice and fundamental democratic rights.

Fin janvier 2021, une vague de protestations de masse a déferlé sur
toutes les grandes villes de Russie. L'occasion de ces protestations a
été l'arrestation de l'opposant Alexei Navalny, mais la véritable cause
était l'énorme inégalité sociale et la privation de droits politiques
dans le pays. Toutes celles et ceux qui sont descendu.e.s dans la rue
n'étaient pas des supporters de Navalny, mais toutes et tous étaient
uni.e.s par un désir de changement social et politique et une lassitude
face au régime autoritaire et corrompu qui dirige la Russie aujourd'hui.
Les manifestants pacifiques ont dû faire face à une brutalité policière
sans précédent (même pour la Russie de Poutine) : en quelques jours,
plus de 10 000 personnes ont été arrêtées, dont beaucoup ont été battues
lors de leur arrestation. Un climat de peur règne dans le pays : des
étudiant.e.s qui ont participé aux rassemblements ont été expulsé.e.s
des universités, des enseignant.e.s qui sympathisaient avec elles et eux
ont perdu leur emploi et les lycéen.ne.s ont été intimidé.e.s en masse
pour avoir exprimé leur position politique.
Bien que nous soyons en désaccord avec l'orientation pro-capitaliste de
Navalny, qui sur ce point n'est pas différente de celle du régime de
Poutine et ne constitue pas une véritable alternative démocratique et
sociale, nous exigeons la libération immédiate d'Alexei Navalny et des
autres prisonniers politiques, et sommes solidaires de tous ceux et de
toutes celles qui, en Russie, luttent pour la justice sociale et
environnementale ainsi que pour les droits démocratiques fondamentaux.

A finales de enero de 2021, una ola de protestas masivas recorrió las
principales ciudades de Rusia. El motivo de estas protestas fue la
detención del opositor Alexei Navalny, pero la verdadera causa fue la
enorme desigualdad social y la privación de derechos políticos en el
país. No todos los que salieron a la calle eran partidarios de Navalny,
pero a todos les unía el deseo de un cambio social y político y el
hartazgo con el régimen autoritario y corrupto que gobierna la Rusia
actual.
Los manifestantes pacíficos tuvieron que enfrentarse a una brutalidad
policial sin precedentes (incluso para la Rusia de Putin): en pocos días
se detuvo a más de 10.000 personas, muchas de las cuales fueron
golpeadas durante su detención. En el país reina un clima de miedo:
estudiantes que participaron en las concentraciones fueron expulsados de
las universidades, profesores que simpatizaban con ellos y ellas
perdieron sus puestos de trabajo, y estudiantes de secundaria fueron
intimidados en masa por expresar su posición política.
Aunque no estamos de acuerdo con la orientación procapitalista de
Navalny, que en este punto no difiere de la del régimen de Putin y no
constituye una auténtica alternativa democrática y social, exigimos la
liberación inmediata de Alexei Navalny y de otros presos políticos, y
nos solidarizamos con todos aquellos que en Rusia luchan por la justicia
social y medioambiental y por los derechos democráticos fundamentales.
