Way back in the early 1980s, when neoliberalism was just taking over, Andre Gunder Frank was at a conference at Cambridge University on "new orthodoxy in economics" --- he argued (prematurely it turned out) that when neo-liberalism failed (we weren't calling it that back then) the capitalist nations would turn to "capitalist planning." That's what "industrial policy" is --- Japan's version took a hit with the Japanese economy's stagnation in the late 1980s and 1990s --- but in fact, China's economic success is definitely a case of "capitalist" planning ---
I think there is a good part of the American elite that has throw in its lots with the "capitalist planners" --- the left needs to push it towards more income redistribution and more rules cutting (ending?) pollution and dependence on fossil fuels -- but (if we want to be optimistic) there is a merging of interests between the Green capitalist planners and those supporting the Green New Deal (for one example) --- Biden will need the left to push through his agenda --- he will have to throw us some things (like going big on relief) -- TO BE CONTINUED (the article is long but well worth reading) On Thu, Feb 11, 2021 at 12:15 PM Andrew Stewart <[email protected]> wrote: > Who here actually believes this?
