As some people here may remember. I have long been interested in similarities
between historical materialism and Darwinian biology. Back in 1998, I wrote on
this list about how G. A. Cohen's analysis of functional explanations as
presented in his book *Karl Marx's Theory of History: A Defence* could shed
light on the treatment of functional explanations as discussed by evolutionary
biologists like Ernst Mayr.

More recently, I have been interested in attempts by people like Paul Nolan and
Alan Carling to present specifically Darwinian interpretations of historical
materialism. Although not discussed in either price, I would note that attempts
to draw analogies between Darwinian biology and historical materialism are
nothing new. One can find such attempts in Engels, as well as Kautsky and
Plekhanov, and many later writers too.
