It's probably worth noting that, historically, the Democratic party was
probably the most important institutional architect of "whiteness" in the
nineteenth and early twentieth century.

People frequently wonder how it is that political parties change.  The key
is to remember than either of them have any values at all more important
than winning elections and getting control of the power (and budgets) of
governing bodies.  That trumps everything they promise voters in order  to
win, and shapes the nature of their policies, even those that are
ostensibly helpful to people.

The current anticlimactic pie fight in Congress was a case in point.

Loyalty to one or another of these parties among the people always involves
various levels of irrationality, but it's no less intense as a result.
Every election has been very stressful because the personal attacks from
one side or no less vicious than from the other.  My sympathies to all who
have to endure it.
