Amazon Web Services is certainly one of the leading options for hosting desktop
applications in the cloud, with Microsoft and Google, plus a number of smaller
companies constituting the alternative options. Several years ago, when the
company that I work at was first considering moving into the cloud, Amazon was
one of the first options that we looked at. We took out a free trial
subscription, and I must say, that I found it pretty easy to adapt my company's
desktop application so it could be run in Amazon's cloud. Eventually, we didn't
go with that option, instead opting for a cloud hosting company that uses
Microsoft technology.

And, as the NY Times article points out, cloud hosting is simply just one
service that is being provided by Amazon. So yes, Amazon Web Services is just
one more area where Amazon is expanding its monopoly power.
