They rule Syria, of course, as ruling classes do. You might have noticed
that they've spend the last decade waging a genocidal counterrevolutionary
war against an uprising based overwhelmingly in the working class and
semi-proletarian shanties around Damascus and Aleppo and in the poorer
regional towns, those most hit by Assad junior's neo-liberal "reforms." The
class divide in Syria was probably clearer than in any of the Artab Spring
uprisings. One specific aspect, though, is that a large part of this
capitalist oligarchy are family friends and close friends and cronies of
the Assad family.
