I recommend Richard White's "The Republic for Which It Stands: The
United States during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, 1865-1896". Like
Mark Lause and Howard Zinn, White excels at debunking bourgeois history.
His "'It's Your Misfortune and None of My Own': A New History of the
American West" is on my bookshelf at home. It's great.
