The book *The Return of Nature*, by John Bellamy Foster, shows the role
played by biologists and scientists from other disciplines, all of whom
shared a non-mechanical materialist approach to science, together with
several Marxists, in setting up the foundations of ecology, between late
19th and early 20th centuries.
