Re: Bari Weiss. She deserves the same respect as any other person who tries to carve out a space in the online debating space. Her letter of resignation from the NYT is worth reading: https://www.bariweiss.com/resignation-letter
As for the New York Times, it now seems it might be pulling in its "woke" claws a bit. See the Bret Stephens column: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/22/opinion/bon-appetit-cancel-culture.html This column starts off talking about ethnic cuisine, but later gets to the woke point: What comes next? In January, Jason Kilborn, a law professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was placed on indefinite administrative leave ( https://www.chronicle.com/article/is-this-law-professor-really-a-homicidal-threat ) , barred from campus and kicked off his committee assignments after students protested that he had included “n____” and “b_____” as part of his semester exam on civil procedure. For more on Jason Kilborn, see: https://www.thefire.org/fire-warns-university-of-illinois-at-chicago-over-investigation-into-law-professors-exam-question/ Another example of the New York Times beginning to shift perspective, there's an article by Michael Powell on the Smith College racist harassment case: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/24/us/smith-college-race.html While the Times sponsored the 1619 Project, which conforms to the elitist "social justice" agenda, it is undoubtedly aware that there is a growing wave of opposition to the injustices meted out by the woke warriors who occupy positions of administrative authority. One of the significant personalities who has come out strongly against the cultural identity movement is John McWhorter, a linguistics professor at Columbia University. He calls the woke agenda a "religion." See: https://johnmcwhorter.substack.com/p/the-elect-neoracists-posing-as-antiracists The shift at NYT doesn't mean that we are approaching the demise of the tyranny of cultural identity any time soon. But, admittedly, there have been many disciplinary wrongs committed, too many cancellations of online accounts and denial of free speech rights for those who wish to enjoy the same right as anyone else to make their voices heard. Freedom of speech is more deeply rooted in U.S. political culture than is the authority of the woke elite. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
