As far as we know, the worst per capita death rate from COVID world wide is in the UK. The qualifier - 'as far as we know' - is only because some governments will not release true data, and indeed perhaps might not even be aware of - the real death rates. For example, Modi's India, and Bolsanaro's Brazil. I mean who cares about the numbers dying in the slums or jungles; or indeed - can muster the resources to count the dead there? The Johnson Govt. in response to much criticism on its appalling handling of the COVID pandemic in the UK, said it would set up an enquiry after the pandemic settled down. No doubt, this was a way of escaping censure since people will forget the bad, once that happens. Now of course Johnson rides the vaccine successes for all he can, hoping for more reflected glory.
The campaign of 'Keep our NHS Public' (KONP) - antedated the pandemic. It was set up to assist the failing NHS - which under-financed, and set upon as prey by private companies (especially US ones) at it was, was and is in a parlous way. Far from Aneurin Bevan's original vision, it had been over the years 1970 onwards treated as a source of revenue by private insurers and big corporate health firms. While that was the primary mission of KONP - it rightly could not avoid the exposure of the COVID mishandling. This enquiry includes many eminent speakers including Michael Marmot who continues to expose the effects of class on people's health. But it also includes workers, health care personell, and those whose voice is often unheard. It is chaired by an eminent QC - Michael Mansfield - who also has been pivotal in the Grenfell Enquiry (where a horrific fire killed inhabitants after it engulfed their council building which had been coated in a cheap, but dangerously flammable material to save money). Mansfield has been a legal voice for many under-priviliged sectors in the UK. The following is the first of a planned series fo filmed inquiries on COVID in Britain.
