This has been known for quite some time.  The huge server farms necessary to 
put on "the cloud" are bad enough, but apparently bitcoin mining puts the 
frosting on a very rotten environmental cake.

I wonder whether anyone has estimated the electricity cost of the quantum 
computers that, like nuclear fusion, are always twenty years away, and which a 
particularly driveling example of a Putain de Putin recently trumpeted on 
Counterpunch as the harbingers of a "non binary" (ie Putinized) brave new 
world.   Would it be less, more--extravagantly more--or what at all? Maybe 
quantum computing would make bitcoin less of an environmental threat? Or more?
