This has been known for quite some time. The huge server farms necessary to put on "the cloud" are bad enough, but apparently bitcoin mining puts the frosting on a very rotten environmental cake. I wonder whether anyone has estimated the electricity cost of the quantum computers that, like nuclear fusion, are always twenty years away, and which a particularly driveling example of a Putain de Putin recently trumpeted on Counterpunch as the harbingers of a "non binary" (ie Putinized) brave new world. Would it be less, more--extravagantly more--or what at all? Maybe quantum computing would make bitcoin less of an environmental threat? Or more? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
