There are many who are faith believers - and want a patriarchy and want private property and state religion. They want anti-sex views and destruction of this planet's sustainable environment. Stalin was influenced by religion - was that beneficial to this world? As for the groups cited below - as most all religions - there is a right and left politics of each. MOST U. S. Quakers do not support socialism. I wish they did, some have great wealth but not for workers rule. Richard Nixon was no socialist. The next listed is: The Catholic Worker - well Dorothy Day was a homophobe who would not accept Gay liberation literature to even read from me. They with the Sojourners and other groups, opposed having Gay speakers at antiwar coalition events - and never cared about what was being done to Gays. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference - weren't they one of the groups tried to remove their own founder Bayard Rustin from the Aug. 28, 1963 March on Washington, when U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond denounced Rustin for being Gay? Did not Rev. Walter Fauntroy work actively with the right wing religious evangelists for decades, opposed to every anti-discriminatory effort? It would be a surprise to SCLC supporting socialism, among many of those ministers. So perhaps Andrew Stewart meant religion was fine for hetero males, who support the patriarchy, etc. There are membership openings for the United Society for Believers in Christ's Second Coming (The Shakers), who hold some socialist practices. But is that the socialism we strive for? Of course those into various organized religions - do not generally favor THEIR religion turning over their religions property and ending hate speech, etc. The times when Social Gospel white protestants were publicly in favor of socialism, that Andrew refers to, was also in those days, many of then supporting Jim Crow racism and wife beating, child beating and death to queers, etc., etc. There are those who even think the Dali Lama having a palace with servants (slaves?) and the pope in Rome (bless his heart, or even her heart?) have to change - and have all their wealth and property expropriated too. Shall we discuss reparations by these organized religions to their victims? Lots of stolen people's property and slave labor, to create those organized religion's wealth. Does this mean we can count on Andrew ending marriage - or allowing me to have three husbands? And assume we all agree to ending both the nuclear family for many - and avery different child raising than current in the U. S. In the Debs era Christian Socialist was one of the most popular periodical in America. Quakers, Catholic Workers, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, all had socialist constituents.
