I would emphasize "goal". To the degree society still needs fossil fuels, we
have to extract them. I don't think it was a mistake that countries had to use
their natural resources as "insurance". Not just that very every single
material goal, such as lifting the majority of Venezuelans out of poverty was
based on "insurance". I noted, and was attacked, for writing that Venezuelan
oil is as bad as Canadian tar sands. There was an ignorant "how dare you!!??!!"
replies to me when I wrote the truth. At the same time I defended Venezuela
extracting that oil. They really had zero choice in the matter. That is true
today as it was 15 years ago. So what one is really talking about the a
"transition" away from *most* but not all extraction of natural resources.
There will always be, for example, some petroleum based extractions if we want
to continue to use some plastics which, in fact one needs for anything that
uses electronics to heavy industry. We will never go back to the 19th Century
level of technology without a decent in grotesque barbarism. So we need to
figure out a balance, and, we need to do start advocating policies that *now*
under capitalism that can point in that direction. I would point, for example,
to regulations eliminating the use of single use plastic production of bags and
bottles. Simple yet profound. A small proof of this is that when California
started mandatory 10 cent/25 cent tax payable by the consumer for any plastic
bag it was astounding how clean the highways and streets of the state cleaned
up. It is still a problem but not like it was before the implementation of the
surcharge.
