Dear friends at Monthly Review,
The relationship between Monthly Review and MR Online or MRZine before
it has been murky. As old-timers might remember, MRZine was in effect
Yoshie Furuhashi's blog. Furuhashi was hired despite her frequent
references to Paul Sweezy as a "neo-Smithian" when she was on Marxmail
and LBO-Talk. I was puzzled by how this did not disqualify her just as I
was puzzled by the consideration of hiring Rakesh Bhandari to run MR
Books. Like Furuhashi, Bhandari wrote frequent dismissals of Sweezy but
from a different angle. (Can't remember what exactly.) Like the furor
over the Qiao Collective, a group of about 50 Iranians living in exile
wrote an open letter denouncing Furuhashi's open support for
Ahmadinejad, who she once dubbed as more of a socialist than Hugo
Chavez. I strongly suspect that John Mage was key to these hiring
decisions but that bothers me less than John Bellamy Foster's
indifference to the bad will he cost the magazine, which has never
stooped to these levels. Nor the books department that has always held
its head up high.
MR Online is basically MRZine but with a new, unnamed editor. It is most
unusual for such a publication to not have a name attached to it. In my
view, it is the most glaring violation of the transparency we expect
from radicals. My guess is that they wanted to protect him from angry
Syrians or Ukrainians but at what cost?
