These conversations reveal that despair over the economic situation cuts
across boundaries of political loyalty and even encompasses the regime’s
base. Syrians, whether regime supporters, opponents, or apolitical,
express anger toward those on top who are enriching themselves while
people starve. Most Syrians do not trust the government’s ability to dig
the country out of the current crisis, but just as many see little hope
for an alternative or think the regime will collapse or reform due to
economic pressure — the belief underlying the wide-ranging sanctions
imposed by the West.
