I'm not sure what Roger means by this. Due to "white guilt", many leftists
"automatically want to believe the best of people of colour." I'm afraid
that does not explain the knee-jerk "anti-imperialsm" at all. Maybe the
"white guilt" bit, but not the rest. Quite the opposite. The whole point of
this statement is that is that mostly white people in the West have been
pouring their western-centric venom all over Syrians ("people of colour")
for a decade, as these Syrians have their homes, schools, hospitals blasted
to bits, the children abducted, tortured and disappeared, as half their
population has been uprooted. The problem of all these, mostly white,
western "anti-imperialists" is that they have not listened to, not
"believed", any of these Syrian people at all; they have preferred to
listen to their torturers and bombers. They have always denied the agency
of the Syrians themselves. They have been arch-Orientalists, who have
decided from their comfortable western homes that Syrians probably don't
value things such as free speech, free expression, the right to express
views without being jailed, tortured and killed. This statement has been
launched by a significant group of people, including a significant number
of Syrians.Read the last 3 paragraphs of the statement again for the essence of this statement.
