In Germany alone, there have now been 31 cases of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia reported, with 9 of them fatal. The article at the end of this from the Atlantic is in my view, incredibly sound - and balanced. Frankly it is very very difficult & I am very glad I was not one of the regulators here, at the start of this observation of side-effects. Very tricky balance - that between the risks from COVID and thus enhancing-promoting a vaxx take-up vs: calling a stop on side-effects. So the start point should be - although the writer is not quite explicit about this - that a vaccine should *not* kill healthy young persons. You are giving it to presumed healthy people in the first place. The ethical point to make is that you do not induce a bad state in the baseline healthy.
It is - especially early on in the observation of the side-effects as say 2-3 weeks ago - a very very tough call. But I think the European speakers-regulators and not the British pro-vaxx A-Z pundits - have got it right. No doubt a Leftist would add certain other matters not covered by the 'Atlantic' writer. For example: (i) If as was supposedly intended later on (when all the rich countries covered-vaxxed, to roll this out in the colonised world - it will be *impossible* to mitigate lethal side-effects. Who will monitor? Who can afford to put preventive services in place for this, when the population is not receiving health care at baseline? The ambiguous-equivocal behaviour of the WHO is a whole different saga on which books will be written. (ii) the major issues of the pharmacy industry on which volumes have long been written & said - antedating the COVID crisis. That is the story of a search for profits which impeded the notion of even venturing into vaccines in the first place. (iii) The general matter of inter-company competition rather than cooperation between states and international bodies, when developing a world-wide solution. Again the search for profit. One other issue that has not been discussed even in the left press is the major conflict of interest between the British government, A-Z and the Oxford vaccine group. One (iv) The matter of side-effects that might kill off people in what is euphemistically called the 'Lower Income Cultures' - the still colonised world might be the best quick translation - is immaterial in the reckoning of the power broker imperialist countries. This is 'herd immunity' writ large - i.e for their security, the imperialist countries don't care who dies off in the LICs, so long as they get rid of the lingering threat of Covid.
