Many of us here and around the World are watching in real time the Trial
of Derek Chauvin former Minneapolis Policeman. Every local Television
Station and several National and international Cable news outlets and
countless newspapers and magazine writers are here in Minneapolis
following every single word uttered here.
The Prosecution (the side we normally oppose) is an assemblage of the
Minnesota Attorney General’s Office and the Senior Hennepin County
Associate District Attorney.
Eric Nelson whose real client is the Minneapolis Police “Union”
represents Chauvin. He’s a top notch Criminal Defense Attorney. In his
last high profile case his legal argument boiled down to arguing that
his client who murdered a Person of Color with her car, first hitting
him then dragging him under her car before leaving the scene while she
was blindingly drunk and speeding was distraught and anxious because
she’d lost her “white” privilege
This last point represents the approach Nelson is taking in his defense
of Chauvin. He and his team from their opening Statement to his earliest
questions to the 9-1-1 Operator/Dispatcher focus on George Floyd’s
character, George Floyd’s behavior and without ever mentioning it or
using any language that George Floyd killed himself because George Floyd
was a bad person. One example immediately used was that Floyd tried
passing a counterfeit $20 Bill. In turn, I was very disappointed with
the Prosecution on this point, Were they politically astute, they’d have
stated that there’s no Evidence that George Floyd knew the $20 Bill was
counterfeit. What we’ll hear if you continue watching this Trial is
every racist Trope imaginable. Of course these racist tropes will be
heated repackaged with sharp tongued legal terms but the thrust of the
Defense is to persuade the Jury that George Floyd not Derek Chauvin is
guilty.
This is first and foremost a Political Trial with political reputations
and futures on the line. For example were Chauvin to be found not guilty
on all counts we could see
the City of Minneapolis be required to return Chauvin to active duty
with the payment to him of back pay with interest. On the other hand,
we’ll have to wait and see how Attorney General Keith Ellison (who
formerly was the 5th Congressional District Representative, the seat
currently occupied by ILhan Omar) Minnesota’s first Black and Muslim AG
has utilized his bottomless bank account. I’m curious what experts
they’ll bring in and how much they’ll politicize or depoliticize their
prosecution. Here, prosecutors broader politics, their political
orientation their role as petty oppressors of the Working Class play
into not only how they approach these matters but their overall
inability to prosecute a case in the Class interests of the victim.
There’s two more elements to this Trial. The first of the two is the
Jury. Much has been made of the “multi-racial” makeup of the Jury, with
a special focus being placed on two Black immigrant juries who I believe
are both in business, whereas a Black Worker from South Minneapolis was
not allowed into the Jury as he was viewed to b prejudicial to Chauvin.
The dismissal of this prospective Juror is in my opinion extremely
important as it demonstrates how Class bias plays a more determinate
role in whose gotten on the Jury than those who did not. It also shows
how focusing to much attention on “race” obscures the class character
and the Class outlook of prospective jurors each side looks to put on
Juries, not just this Jury. Of course what we’re not privy too is the
extensive questionnaires that were used to remove people. Overall, even
in minor cases it’s difficult to get on a Jury as again both sides laser
like focus is in finding a juror with a particular class perspective.
The fourth element is the people in the Streets, the Black Community,
the Floyd Family, the political activists and for effect the many broad
“movement celebrities” that have shown up. Politically, holding
demonstrations outside a fortified fenced in Government Center IMO
serves no purpose. In my opinion demos in the metro communities would be
of more value or at BlueKluxKlan stations of oppression.
