Time to show my age once again --- Who remembers the novel IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE by Sinclair Lewis. The story is that in 1936, a far out populist (a "farmer named Berzilius Windrip") captures the Democratic Party nomination and succeeds in winning the Presidency because FDR was a failure ... He then institutes FASCISM --- out and out fascism ---
the idea of his campaign is to be a "regular guy" (farmers were more popular and plentiful in 1936 ---) just like J.D. Vance claims to be a "regular guy" despite his Yale degree, and millions of dollars ....
