JPLO Note: Excellent. The history of my family's resistance and escape from the
Warsaw and Lublin ghettos has never received recognition. Although the taped
audio interviews with my parents in Yiddish are deposited with the Washington
Holocaust Memorial Museum, they have still not been translated into English.

So here it is; my mother's brother Myer Goldseider, escaped from the Warsaw
ghetto in 1940 and set up camp in the Russian forest across the border. The
message my mother Cyrla Goldseider received from him provided the directions on
how to join him there. After escaping by passing as a Polish Christian she
returned to the ghetto with similar messages for others and escaped again with
her younger sister. Her mother refused to leave Poland, her homeland, and
because there was no kosher food to eat in the USSR. In 1941 Myer set up a
Bundist Partisan unit until he was conscripted into the Red Army, where he was
lost.

My father did the same by escaping from the Lublin ghetto but on his own. He
returned as well and got his younger brother out who had actually joined the
Jewish police of the ghetto.

And, there are many more incidents to tell.

Objet : [marxmail] Hidden Stories of Jewish Resistance to Nazis in WW 2 Poland

I was fascinated by the widespread resistance efforts of Polish Jews, but
equally by their absence from current understandings of the war. Of all the
legions of Holocaust tales, what had happened to this one?

I first encountered this phenomenon several years ago, when I accidentally came
across a collection of Yiddish writing by and about young Polish-Jewish women
who rebelled against the Nazis. These “ghetto girls” paid off Gestapo guards,
hid revolvers in marmalade jars, and built underground bunkers. They flung
homemade explosives and blew up German trains. I was stunned. Why had I – a
Jewish writer from a survivor family, not to mention a trained historian who
held a Ph.D. in feminist art — never heard this side of the story?
