Michael Roberts is correct that Keynes was no radical. Indeed, openly expressed
disdain for the working class. He seems puzzled that someone like Joan Robinson
seemed in his view to be unaware of that. But given that Joan Robinson was a
member of Keynes's inner circle, his Circus, that seems most unlikely. He seems
unaware of the fact that Joan Robinson was also a great admirer of Michal
Kalecki, who was a professed Marxist, and who, as Robinson liked to point out,
had developed a macroeconomic analysis that was very similar to Keynes's prior
to Keynes's own publication of his *General Theory.* Indeed, Robinson held that
Kalecki's treatment of the subject was clearer and more lucid than Keynes's own
version of it. In all of his discussion of both Robinson and Kalecki he doesn't
draw a connection between the two economists, nor does he make any mention of
Paul Sweezy, an avowed Marxist, who was influenced by both Robinson and
Kalecki, as well as by Keynes. To be sure, Sweezy in turn was criticized by
other Marxists for this. The senior Paul Mattick was probably one of the most
notable Marxist critics of Sweezy. A brief critique of Sweezy and Baran's
*Monopoly Capital* can be found here (
https://www.marxists.org/archive/mattick-paul/1966/monopoly-capital.htm ) and
in his book *Marx and Keynes: The Limits of the Mixed Economy. (
https://www.marxists.org/archive/mattick-paul/1969/marx-keynes/index.htm )*
Michael Roberts' own critique of the post-Keynesians seems to me to echo some
Paul Mattick's arguments. And in contrast with both Mattick and Roberts, Paul
Sweezy could be insistent on the radicalism of some of the Keynesians as he was
in this piece ( https://mronline.org/2010/06/11/about-keynes-and-keynesians/ ).
